Research Data Academy Series: From Planning, Analysis to Sharing
— by Chloe Ng
The Research Data Academy, organized by the HKU Libraries, is a series of training sessions designed to strengthen your data literacy skills. It provides researchers with essential practices and useful tools that help you to work with your research data efficiently. Registration is now open. All HKU students and staff who are engaged in research activities and/or interested in data management for research projects are welcome!
Research Data Management and Planning
If you have no idea on what research data management (RDM) is, here is the opportunity to learn the basics. The series will start with the first session introducing you to the elementary ideas on what the term “research data” refers to, reasons for research data management and planning, and major components in writing a Data Management Plan (DMP). It will be followed by a Ph.D. student sharing session which two current HKU Ph.D. students will share their own RDM experience using the i-REACH project as an example. Details of the sessions are:
1. Introduction to Research Data Management & Data Management Plan
7 March 2024 (Thu) | 2:30pm – 4:00pm | E-Learning Lab, G/F, Main Library and live streamed on Zoom
Speaker: Ms. Florence Ng (Research Services Librarian, HKU Libraries)
2. Unlocking Research Potential: Effective Data Management for Transdisciplinary Success
12 March 2024 (Tue) | 2:30pm – 3:30pm | Zoom
Co-organizer: i-REACH Project (Advanced Technologies Institute, HKU and Sau Po Centre on Ageing, HKU)
Speakers: Miss Clio Cheng (Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Social Work & Social Administration, HKU) & Mr. Kehan Zou (Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Industrial and Manufacturing System Engineering, HKU)
Data Collection and Processing
Data collection and processing are essential steps in any research project, as they enable researchers to gather relevant information and prepare it for analysis. Check out the two sessions introducing you to web scrapping, text preprocessing, and data cleaning:
3. Introduction to Web Scraping & Text Preprocessing in Python
25 March 2024 (Mon) | 2:30pm – 3:30pm | Zoom

4. Mastering Data Cleaning Techniques
28 March 2024 (Thu) | 2:30pm – 3:30pm | Zoom
Speakers: Ms. Mahboobani Vanessa Ramesh (Data Services & Information Research Librarian, HKU Libraries) & Ms. Jessica Lee (Executive Officer (Digital Scholarship and Data Analytics), HKU Libraries)
Data Analysis and Visualization
Data analysis and visualization are important skills for researchers to explore, understand, and communicate their data effectively. We are offering four sessions presenting you with various useful tools for data analysis and visualization, including Flourish, VOSViewer, Voyant Tools, and Python. These sessions aim to help you to create interactive and insightful data stories. No programming background or knowledge is required!
5. Creating Interactive Visualizations and Data Stories with Online Visualization Tool – Flourish

Data Preservation and Sharing
In May, guest speakers from PLOS will introduce the practice of data sharing and how it can benefit your research. We will also guide you through how to share your data on DataHub, the HKU institutional data repository, and the featured functions of it. Check out the two sessions below on data preservation and sharing:
9. Sharing research data – practical examples of what to do and why it benefits your research
2 May 2024 (Thu) | 4:30pm – 5:30pm | Zoom
Co-organizer: The Public Library of Science (PLOS)
Speakers: Dr. Lauren Cadwallader (Open Research Manager, PLOS) and Dr. Julia Squarr (Journal Development Manager, PLOS)
10. Managing data and scholarly outputs on DataHub
